Boumort Mountain Range

wild nature and exceptional skies in Baix Pallars

Between deep ravines and imposing ridges, the Boumort mountain range rises as one of the most impressive natural areas in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. Located between several municipalities —such as Baix Pallars, Conca de Dalt and Abella de la Conca—, it forms part of the Natura 2000 Network and is a place of great ecological, geological and landscape value.

A land of stories and altitude

The Cap de Boumort, at 2,076 metres, is the highest point in the range. The origin of the name is not entirely clear: it may refer to an ancient cliff that separated Christians and Muslims, to the ruins of a castle, or —as seems more likely— to the notable presence of oxen and livestock in ancient times, from which the combination “bou” + “mort” may have arisen.

The range is surrounded by ravines and secondary ridges, such as the Infern ravine, which forms the natural boundary between Baix Pallars and Conca de Dalt.

An exceptional nature reserve

Emblematic wildlife

Boumort is home to one of the richest wild fauna areas in the country, with the presence of red deer, chamois and roe deer; bearded vultures, griffon vultures, black vultures and Egyptian vultures; golden eagles and other birds of prey.

It is the only place in Europe where the four species of vulture found on the continent breed, a milestone in nature conservation highlighted by the Buseu Project.

Diverse vegetation

The flora includes forests of Scots pine, black pine and oak woods, with undergrowth rich in thyme, juniper and other Mediterranean species.

The spectacle of the deer rut

The spectacle of the deer rut
Every autumn, between mid-September and mid-October, the mountain range becomes the setting for one of the most fascinating natural events: the deer rut. During this period, males compete for leadership of the harems and let out powerful roars in the midst of the silence of the forests.

Where to observe it

The Boumort National Game Reserve, within the municipality of Baix Pallars, is one of the best places to experience this unique moment. There are designated viewpoints, such as the one at the Cuberes refuge, and several local companies offer guided 4×4 outings to get close to the deer with the utmost respect:

A dark sky full of stars

The sky over Boumort and Baix Pallars has been awarded the quality night sky zone distinction, making it ideal for astronomical observation. The Baén stargazing observatory and the open skies of the mountain range are privileged places to enjoy nature… also at night.
