Casa de la Sal: a unique building in the heart of Pallars Sobirà

Casa de la Sal, also known as the Royal Alfolí, is the former salt storehouse and the current home of the Museu de Gerri de la Sal. It is the most emblematic non-religious building in the whole of Pallars Sobirà. Located in the highest part of the historic centre of Gerri, in Mercadal Square, the building consists of three floors of 640 m² each and an attic space, the result of an extension carried out in the 18th century.

A place with many lives

Over the centuries, the building has been closely linked to the production and trade of salt, although it has served many different purposes. Beyond the storage, drying, packaging and distribution of salt, the second floor had a more social and cultural role: it housed a theatre, two schools (one for boys and one for girls) and the teachers’ quarters. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1938), the site was turned into military barracks, before returning to its original function as a warehouse until its definitive closure in 1985.
