Pla de Corts

Pla de Corts: living nature and ancient history in the heart of Baix Pallars

Between the Noguera Pallaresa and the Vall Fosca lies one of the most singular places in Pallars Sobirà: the Pla de Corts. This plateau, shaped like a natural amphitheatre, rises above the Collegats Gorge, sheltered by the majestic silhouette of the Sleeping Giantess.

A name with livestock roots

The place name “Corts” refers to stables or livestock pens, an activity that has deeply shaped the identity of this land. The name has endured over the centuries and still echoes today in villages such as Cortscastell and Montcortès, a living legacy of an agricultural and livestock-raising past.

A territory inhabited since prehistory

Thanks to its privileged location, Pla de Corts has been inhabited by humans since remote times. The dolmens and megalithic monuments scattered across its surroundings speak of a history stretching back thousands of years. During the Middle Ages, it formed part of the sphere of influence of the monastery of Santa Maria de Gerri and the Counts of Pallars, closely linked to the walled village of Peramea.

A paradise for wildlife observation

Today, Pla de Corts is recognised as one of the areas with the richest birdlife in Pallars Sobirà. Its skies are home to the majestic flight of red kites, common buzzards and Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures and bearded vultures.

Its woods and fields are also home to mammals and ground-dwelling birds such as the squirrel, wild boar, hare, partridge and quail.
