The legend of the Sleeping Giantess
According to oral tradition, long ago a giantess lived in the mountains of Pallars. She was known for her kindness and strength, and helped the people of Baix Pallars with their everyday tasks: she found lost livestock, kept wolves away from the flocks and shared out wheat and firewood during the harshest winters. She only asked that no one take more than they needed.
Everything changed when a businessman began to cut down trees in the forest of Balestui for profit. The forest goblins, guardians of the natural balance, asked the giantess for help. Angry, she confronted the businessman and his workers until they gave up their plans.
After this intervention, the giantess decided to fall asleep forever in the mountain and turned into rock. But she left behind a promise: if Pallars ever needed her, she would awaken to protect her people and her land once again.
