Balestui

Balestui: A village with monastic roots in the Ancs valley

Balestui is the first settlement you come across when entering the Ancs valley, in the north-west sector of the municipality of Baix Pallars. It formerly belonged to the municipality of Peramea, until its incorporation into the municipality of Baix Pallars in 1969.

The first documented references to Balestui date from the 9th century and refer to the old church of Sant Fruitós, now abandoned. At that time, the church functioned as a monastic cell, initially linked to the monastery of Senterada by decision of the Bishop of Urgell.

However, throughout the 10th century, Sant Fruitós already appears as a possession of the monastery of Santa Maria de Gerri, which consolidated its control over the area.

The village houses are arranged along a main street that connected with the old path to Peramea and other villages in the Pla de Corts. At the exit of the village, an original cobbled section is still preserved, showing the historic layout of this traditional route.

From Balestui starts a path leading to an ancient rock shelter, where the monastic cell of Sant Esteve de Perabella was located, on the left bank of the Ancs ravine. Although few documentary references remain, it is known that in the 10th century it was already a possession of the monastery of Gerri. The monastery disappeared at an uncertain date, but its memory remains as part of the spiritual and historical heritage of the valley.
