Bretui

Bretui: Views over the Pla de Corts and a legacy linked to the monastery of Gerri

Bretui is a small hamlet located in the north-west sector of the municipality of Baix Pallars, at 1,055 metres above sea level, with privileged views over the Pla de Corts, which it overlooks from a sunny, elevated position.

Formerly linked to the village of Peramea, Bretui became part of the municipality of Montcortès in the 19th century, until it was definitively incorporated into the municipality of Baix Pallars in 1969.

The village has a south-facing orientation, with a compact settlement made up of nineteen houses distributed along several streets. One standout building is Casa Peret, an 18th-century manor house located at the entrance to the village coming from Peramea.

The first documented references to Bretui date from the late 11th and early 12th centuries. In this period, the village, with twenty-five farmsteads, appears in an inventory of the monastery of Santa Maria de Gerri as a place where tithes on livestock were collected in the Pla de Corts. The church of Sant Esteve also appears as a possession of the monastery.

The church of Sant Esteve

The current building dates from the 18th century. It is a church with:

  • A single nave covered with a barrel vault
  • Side chapels
  • A doorway on the eastern façade
  • A tower bell tower at the south-east end of the nave

Chapel of Sant Antoni de Pàdua

In the centre of the village, the remains of the chapel of Sant Antoni are preserved, a single-nave oratory and a vestige of the local religious heritage.

Thanks to its elevated location, Bretui offers exceptional views over the Pla de Corts and its natural surroundings. This peaceful, open landscape is ideal for hiking and cycling, with paths linking to other villages and heritage sites in the area.
