Cortscastells
Cortscastells
Cortscastell is a small hamlet with just one inhabited house, located at 818 metres above sea level in the middle of the Pla de Corts, near the Morreres ravine. It borders Bretui to the north, Peramea to the east, Peracalç to the west and Pujol to the south. The origin of its place name comes from the castle of Corts, already documented in the 9th century, situated on top of the rock around which the village developed.
On the outskirts of the hamlet stands the small Romanesque church of Santa Anna (formerly dedicated to Santa Maria), already documented in the 10th century. It has a single rectangular nave, covered with a barrel vault, and a semicircular apse to the east covered with a quarter-sphere vault. The church walls are reinforced with buttresses.
It has a small tower bell tower located at the angle formed by the south and west walls. Over time this church underwent several modifications: the most significant date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when an additional structure was attached to the west wall and a sacristy was added on the south side. The Museu Diocesà d’Urgell preserves a polychrome Virgin, probably from the 13th century, originating from this church.
Cortscastell is surrounded by meadows and forests and, like all the villages of the Pla de Corts, is a place of great natural and scenic interest, making it an ideal spot for hiking and cycling.
